Description

10 Sessions: No sessions on 2/17. Who should take this class: Students who took Fall 2025 Level 1 Tinkering Foundations or students new to making, coding, or circuits. No prior experience needed! What you will learn (Winter Theme - Things That Move) Students explore movement in all its forms by designing and building animated characters and creations with Micro:bit-controlled servo motors. A signature project is designing cardboard characters with moving limbs—a dancing robot with articulated arms and legs, an animal with a wagging tail or nodding head, or a carnival-inspired creation with moving parts. Through hands-on experimentation with servo motors, students learn how to program smooth, precise movements and bring their cardboard creations to life. We will also use CAD design to design components like wheels or arms for our creations. Skills practiced: • Basic circuits • Servo motor control and programming • Micro:bit programming using MakeCode • Intro to CAD design for 3D printing or laser cutting • Cardboard engineering • Understanding mechanical linkages and movement • Prototyping and iteration • User-centered design 5% family discount for anyone signing up more than one person for classes at the Maker Hive.
