Description

Who should take this class: Young builders (grades K–2) who love to create with their hands. No prior experience needed—just a love of games and making! What you will learn: Step right up! This spring, Cardboard Engineering transforms into a builder’s arcade. Students will design and construct their own carnival and arcade games entirely from cardboard, paper, tape, and everyday craft materials. From mini skee-ball lanes to marble mazes to ring-toss towers, students will explore the engineering principles behind the games they love to play. Each student leaves with a playable game they designed and built themselves—and the pride of knowing they made something that other people can enjoy. Spring Theme — Arcade & Carnival Games: Students will learn the mechanics behind arcade games and then design their own version. Projects might include: • Marble run obstacle courses and ball-drop games • Spinning wheel or pinwheel prize spinners • Mini bowling alleys and skee-ball ramps • Catapult launchers and target-toss games • Final week showcase: set up your own mini arcade for family and friends! Skills practiced: Structural engineering with cardboard • Understanding ramps and inclines • Basic mechanical concepts (levers, pulleys, gravity) • Measurement and spatial reasoning • Creative problem-solving • Iterative design: test, fix, improve • Fine motor skills 5% family discount for anyone signing up more than one person for classes at the Maker Hive.
