Description

Who should take this class: Anyone who loves design, fashion, sewing, crafting, or fiber crafts—and wants to explore how technology can make their creations even more amazing. This class welcomes all experience levels and celebrates creative expression through wearable tech. What you will learn: Combine your design sense with engineering skills! This class teaches you how to embed technology into existing garments and bags—transforming everyday pieces into wearable art. You'll learn circuitry and programming using a microcontroller and sewable lights, then use traditional fiber arts techniques like embroidery and felting to beautifully conceal the electronics. Create pieces that are uniquely yours—where the technology enhances the beauty rather than dominating it. What you will do: Transform your favorite garments and bags into glowing wearable art! This winter, you'll select a jacket, hoodie, tote bag, or other textile item and embellish it with programmable LEDs controlled by a microcontroller. Design custom lighting patterns and animations, then use embroidery, felt, beadwork, or appliqué to artfully hide the electronics while celebrating the light. Skills practiced: • Basics of circuitry • Basic Circuit python programming • Microcontroller basics • Embroidery and fiber arts techniques • Felting • Hand-stitching and secure fastening • Creative problem-solving • User-centered design • Blending technology with traditional crafts 5% family discount for anyone signing up more than one person for classes at the Maker Hive.
