Creative Tech (Grades 6-8)
Tuesdays @ 5:30PM | 10 sessions | 75 mins per session
Description
Level 3: Creative Tech (By teacher placement only. Reach out to us if you have any questions and we can help figure out if this is the right fit for your child). No sessions on 9/23 and 11/11. Who should take this class: Experienced makers (ideally students who have completed Level 2) who are ready for independent challenges and working on their own projects. Creative Tech students work like real engineers and inventors, taking on complex challenges. Students will identify a project/challenge they want to work on, build a plan, work through a prototype before creating a final project. This could be a project for school, a Science and Engineering Fair or for Robo Expo in NYC. In this class, we will move beyond the Micro:bit to also explore the Raspberry Pi Pico and circuitPython programming. We will discuss the differences between these microcontrollers and when to use each type. We will also learn how to solder to create permanent and reliable connections and also explore machine learning models for image, motion and sound recognition. Best outcomes are reached when students participate in this group for the entire year (Fall, Winter and Spring) to allow time for iteration and refinement. Students have the opportunity to showcase their final projects at school Science Fairs or Robo Expo (in NYC). Project Challenges: Instead of completely open-ended projects, students choose from guided challenge themes like “Autonomous Car”, "Interactive Art Installation," "Smart Home Device," "Wearable Technology," or "Environmental Monitor." This provides creative freedom while ensuring manageable scope. Skills practiced: • Micro:bit and/or Raspberry Pi programming • Soldering techniques • Machine learning exploration • User-centered design thinking • Project management • Prototyping and iteration • Sensor integration • CAD design • Laser cutting • 3D printing • Advanced circuits • Presentation skills Pricing includes electronics and all supplies for final take home project. Zelle payment is preferred. Choose "Pay in person or Zelle" at checkout. Look up 914-319-9096 to pay via Zelle.
